Sometimes, the most typical ailments have root causes that are far from ordinary. For example, while some estimates suggest that as many as 10% of Americans suffer from plantar fasciitis, the condition from which the pain stems can vary greatly from patient to patient.

For this blog post, the team at Edmond Norman Foot and Ankle is going to tackle a less typical cause: Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. We hope the info helps you step past any future aches and pains!

What’s the Deal With TTS?

Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is a condition that occurs when the tibial nerve, which runs along the inner ankle and into the sole of your foot, becomes compressed within the tarsal tunnel – a narrow passageway behind your ankle. Several factors can contribute to TTS and the heel pain it inflicts:

  • Flat feet: Having flat feet can cause the tarsal tunnel to narrow, putting pressure on the tibial nerve and potentially irritating the plantar fascia tissue along your sole.
  • Repetitive stress: Running or jumping irritates the tissues around the tibial nerve, causing inflammation and compression.
  • Trauma: An ankle sprain or fracture can damage the structures surrounding the tarsal tunnel and the plantar fascia, increasing the risk of both TTS and heel pain.
  • Arthritis: Inflammation from arthritis can narrow the tarsal tunnel and compress the nerve or cause degeneration in the heel joint.

Symptoms of TTS:

  • Pain, burning, or stinging in the heel, arch, and sole of the foot, worsening with activity.
  • Numbness or tingling in the sole of the foot, especially the toes.
  • Shooting pain that travels up the leg in some cases.
  • Weakness or difficulty moving the foot, particularly when climbing stairs.

Early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing TTS and preventing permanent nerve damage. In severe cases where conservative treatments fail, surgery may be necessary to create more space for the tibial nerve. That complex procedure, however, is a subject for another blog!
