What is Heel Pain / Plantar Fasciitis?

Heel pain is a widespread complaint that can occur due to various reasons, with plantar fasciitis being one of the most common causes. It typically manifests as a sharp, intense pain that is usually felt on the underside of the heel and often most severe with the first steps of the day or after a period of rest.

What are the symptoms of heel pain and plantar fasciitis?

  • Sharp, stabbing pain in the bottom of your foot near the heel, which can be constant or vary with activities.
  • Pain that is usually worse in the morning when you take your first steps out of bed, or after long periods of standing or sitting
  • Pain that typically decreases with movement but might return after long periods on your feet

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the fascia in the heel which can be due to many factors as flat feet, overuse, improper shoe gear, lack of arch supports or orthotics, excessive weight bearing activities like running or excessive walking, abnormal foot structures or biomechanic. Heel pain has a broad range of reasons, which is not plantar fasciitis.  Reasons include but not limited to stress fractures, autoimmune related inflammation, nerve entrapments in ankle or heel, sciatica, heel spurs, arthritis, bone tumors, etc…

Dr. Buksh can help diagnose the various causes of heel pain and differentiate your diagnoses ,by your  full history, examination, X-rays in the office, ultrasound in the office on your first visit.  If necessary other modalities such as MRI, CT may be necessary for further evaluation.

Home remedies like ice, over the counter medication for pain,  supportive shoes and stretching are usually recommended first , if patient has not attempted those.  Examination , history and pain level will determine the scope of treatments.  Bracing, orthotics, physical therapy, corticosteroids, prescription medications, corticosteroids or plasma rich platelets also some of the methods for treating heel pain. Not all heel pain is treated the same.  Plantar fasciitis pain is sometimes associated with other pain in the leg, ankle or even your spine.
